Welcome Letter

Welcome to Brown Elementary School in beautiful, rural Huron Township!

Our active and supportive school family consists of 470 students, 50 staff members, and hundreds of parents and community members. A sign on our school, that greets all visitors, reads, "Welcome to Brown Elementary School, Great Kids, Great Staff, Great Parents, Great Place!"  We strive to promote student academic and behavioral success by employing a wide variety of effective teaching strategies and educational programs and through the use of a school-wide, incentive-based behavioral management policy known as Positive Behavior Support (PBS). The cornerstones of our PBS initiative are that all members of our school family will act in a safe, respectful, and responsible manner at all times at school. We provide myriad positive reinforcements for students exhibiting these expectations.

On the academic front we are very proud of the improvements we have made in standardized and teacher-created assessments over the past 10 years (we won a Michigan Golden Apple Award for dramatic MEAP score improvement in 2001). Our building underwent major improvements/additions in 2001-2002 and is now a state-of-the-art facility. A major celebration is being planned for Brown’s (formally Riverside Elementary) 50th Anniversary next year.

We are also bolstered by the many character building and community service projects we undertake, many of which are spearheaded and run totally by our students. Our highly qualified staff (85% of our teachers hold Masters Degrees in their area of expertise) strive to meet the diverse needs of all of our students.

We are also proud of the positive partnership the Huron School Board and Central Administration has established with the students and families that we serve. We all feel strongly and base our everyday behaviors on the Huron Mission Statement, "Completely Committed to Kids!"
